What is PCB Routing?

PCB Routing Definition

PCB routing refers to the process of connecting wires, resistors, capacitors, transistors, and other components in the circuit through PCB traces, ensuring that signals flow smoothly and are transmitted accurately. Several factors need to be considered during routing, such as signal transmission speed, stability, interference resistance, isolation, and noise. Therefore, the routing must be optimized and adjusted to achieve the best possible results.

FAQs

PCB drilling and routing machines are used to create the holes and cutouts necessary for the components on the PCB. These machines use specialized drill bits and cutting tools to precisely remove material from the board.

Tab Routing Panelization: PCB arrays that can't feasibly use a V-groove method will instead use a tab routing method. With this method, PCBs are pre-cut from the array and held in place on the board with perforated tabs. Three to five holes are often used in these perforation patterns.

PCB Routing Best Practices
  1. Don't Rely On Your Autorouter.
  2. Route High-Speed Signals Over A Solid Ground Plane.
  3. Place Vias In A Grid To Avoid Hot Spots.
  4. Use A 135-Degree Trace Bend.
  5. Increase The Spacing Between Traces To Avoid Crosstalk.
  6. Implement Daisy Chain Routing To Avoid Hot Spots.
  7. Do Not Route Signal Over A Split Plane.

Scoring involves a “V” groove cut into the top and bottom surfaces of your PCB array and is done when your boards are placed together side by side and end to end. Tab routing lets you place more than one board (of either the same or different design) into a given area.
